Discover Mesembs: Veld Walk & Seed Workshop – 1 Dec 2017
Date: Time: - Join the Calitzdorp Succulent Society and Priscilla Burgoyne the Herbarium Curator at the Garden Route Botanical Gardens for a Veld Walk and Seed Workshop to discover and learn about the Mesembs (Vygies) in the veld of the Klein Karoo. The session will comprise of a 2-3 hour veld walk in the morning to discover, examine and learn about the Vygies that occur in the veld. The duration of the Veld Walk will depend on the temperature on the day. The Veld Walk will be followed in the afternoon by a Seed Workshop to learn about the fascinating seed dispersal methods employed by Vygies. Participants will have to opportunity to examine seed capsules up close under microscope and learn how they open under wet conditions to have the seeds shot out into the veld. Each participant will receive seeds to sow in a pot to take home. The day promise to be a fascinating and entertaining discovery of Mesembs and should not be missed. Work Party – 26 May 2017 – Demonstration Garden
Date: Time: - The work continues. To complete our work on the demonstration garden at the Calitzdorp Railway Station we need volunteers to help. That is: * you, * somebody from your family, or * a staff member you can spare for 3 hours. Our second work party will be on Friday 26 May at 9:00 at the Calitzdorp Railway Station. WHAT TO BRING? Bring gloves, shovels (spades) and wheelbarrows. As many rocks as you can. DURATION Approximately 2 hours. DONATIONS You can help by donating your time or resources. Your help on the day will be appreciated, but if you cannot join, you could still contribute. We are looking for donations to continue and complete the project. Date: Time: - We are planning a work party day to begin the demonstration garden at the Calitzdorp Sation. It will be on Tuesday 23 May at 9:00. WHAT TO BRING? Bring gloves, shovels (spades) and wheelbarrows. As many rocks as you can. DURATION Approximately 2 hours. DONATIONS You can help by donating your time or resources. Your help on the day will be appreciated, but if you cannot join, you could still help. We are looking for donations to start and complete the project. We need: soil (approx. 20 cubic meters) rocks, many and fairly large to define the garden space irrigation equipment, 15mm pipe, sprinkling apparatus, valves, etc. plants To make a contribution, call Buck Hemenway on (076-298-7337) to discuss what we still need.

Date: Time: - The Calitzdorp Succulent Society is introducing its first Vetplantfees to be held in the heart of the Klein Karoo, a region where many of the succulents endemic to South Africa, can be seen in their natural environment. The event will provide a showcase of many of South Africa’s beautiful and rare succulents while succulents from all over the world will be on show. Succulent enthusiasts who visit Calitzdorp during the festival will be able to immerse themselves in a range of activities to discover the world of succulents.
